Scheimpflug Mount
Camera/Lens mount for off-normal focus correction

When it's not possible to place your camera and imaging lens normal to the plane that you want to look at, a Scheimpflug mount is required. This allows the image plane to be tilted relative to the plane of the imaging chip in the camera, allowing tilted (off-normal) planes to be clearly in focus.

Our Sheimpflug mount offers +/- 30 degrees of tilt, with X-Y parallax correction and full rotation up to 360 degrees.

The Scheimpflug Principle

In 1904 Theodor Scheimpflug, patented several special cameras for correcting the undesired distortion in photographs taken from balloons when the camera was not pointing straight down. Scheimpflug’s First Principle described how, among other things, three planes must converge along a single line. These three planes are the film plane, the subject plane and lens plane.

A second condition similar to Scheimpflug's Principle, also described in Scheimpflug's patent, states that there is another set of three planes that must converge along a common line. Like the first rule, one plane is the subject plane, the second is again one through the centre of the lens, but this time parallel to the film. The third plane is again perpendicular to the lens axis, but now one focal
length in front of the lens. When both conditions are satisfied, the camera will be in focus.
Even more importantly, the second rule allows one to calculate the required amount of lens tilt relative to the film plane.
Scheimpflug mounts (Tilt Adapters) allow cameras to be set up simply, so that the two conditions can be met. This allows an off normal object plane to be focused onto the sensor chip.
