Laser drilling can be used to produce micro-holes in almost any material. Oxford Lasers offers laser drilling systems and services for micro-hole production and R&D.
Oxford Lasers has over 20 years experience in micro-hole drilling for pinholes, nozzles, orifices, vias, photovoltaic cells etc. Very high position and diameter tolerances can be achieved.
We are known for laser drilling highly accurate small holes and have developed a number of proprietary processes to optimize the laser micro hole drilling process. These proprietary micro drilling techniques, coupled with the most appropriate choice of laser for the job, enable us to micro-drill nozzles etc with a very high diameter accuracy and controlled taper for a wide variety of applications.
Our systems and services have been used to manufacture micro-holes in fuel injection components, vertical probe cards, metered dose inhaler products, pinholes and slits for scientific instrumentation, inkjet printer nozzles, detectors, sensors, high resolution circuitry, fuel cells, fibre optic interconnects and medical devices. We have experience of laser micro-drilling micro-holes in metals, ceramics, diamond, silicon and other semiconductors, polymers, glass and sapphire using industrial visible and UV systems.
This experience has been incorporated in our range of micromachining systems. Laser microdrilling systems are available to suit most micro-hole production and R&D requirements.
Our laser micro-hole drilling service provides access to world leading precision hole drilling technology. This service can be used for R&D through to full production. Minimum micro-hole sizes can be as low as 1 micron in thin materials.
For micro-holes above 20 microns in dameter, we can use our proprietary treppaning technology to generate micro-holes of unsurpassed roundness with controlled taper.
Using a variety of IR, visible and UV sources, we select the correct wavelength and pulse duration, develop the laser micro-hole drilling process and produce the parts. Numbers of micro-holes per part can range from one to tens of thousands. Typical quantities of parts range from one-off for R&D, to tens of thousands per month.

When volumes grow above the level where sub-contract micro-drilling is economic, we can supply laser micromachining systems which incorporate all the lessons learnt during process development and scale-up. Automated part handling can be incorporated where required. In addition we can train the user in laser micro-drilling techniques to ensure that production starts smoothly.
Once the laser micro-drilling system is running at full capacity, our micro-hole drilling service will still be available to cope with peaks in demand.
