Droplet size and shape information are critical parameters within spray drying due to their impact on the physico-chemical properties of the final and the effect on the performance/behaviour of the final product.
The application of spray drying is applied to the production of a number of different products including; milk powder, detergents and pharmaceuticals. The particle size generated is directly dependent upon the initial droplet size generated by the parameters utilised to generate the spray i.e. the nozzle, flow rate and formulation used. Particle size for final products can be critical, for example, if the effectiveness of the product is dependent upon the rate of dissolution. Particle shape can be critical if flow ability is a key parameter in its application.
